Elementary School Academics
1st–5th Grade
Building Strong Foundations in Mind, Heart, and Character
The elementary years are when curiosity turns into capability, and wonder becomes wisdom. At Mt. Salus, we create a learning environment where students don't just memorize facts—they develop critical thinking skills, grow in confidence, and discover how God has uniquely designed them.
Your child will experience challenging academics taught through a biblical worldview, alongside caring teachers who know them by name and celebrate their growth every step of the way.
Rigorous, Time-Tested Curriculum
We use BJU Press curriculum (English, Science, History, and Bible) and Saxon Math—both programs known for building strong academic foundations.
Students work with physical textbooks that encourage focus and retention, and participate in the Accelerated Reading Program to build lifelong reading skills.
Small Classes, Personal Attention
With an average class ratio of 10:1, your child will be known by their peers and teachers.
Our staff have the time and space to understand how each student learns best, challenge them appropriately, and provide the support they need to thrive.
Faith Woven Into Every Subject
Although our students have a Bible class and attend weekly chapel, Biblical truth isn't relegated to a single class period.
From math to science to history, students learn to see the world through a Christ-centered lens and understand how every subject points back to their Creator.

No. As an independent Christian school, we are not required to participate in state testing. However, we do use standardized assessments (STAR Reading & Math and IOWA Assessments) to monitor student growth and ensure academic progress.
Standardized tests are required to maintain our accreditation status.
-
We use BJU Press for English Language Arts, Science, History, and Bible, and Saxon Math for mathematics.
Both are proven, rigorous programs that build strong academic foundations.
We also use physical textbooks rather than digital-only materials to encourage focus and deeper learning.
-
Our elementary classrooms are equipped with iPads that students use for specific projects and learning activities.
We believe in balanced technology use, giving students access to helpful tools without letting screens become a distraction or replace hands-on learning. Since technology is now so accessible in everyday life, our focus is on teaching students when and how to use it purposefully, rather than simply maximizing screen time.
You'll find we prioritize physical textbooks, collaborative work, and direct instruction while incorporating technology where it genuinely enhances learning.

Accelerated Reading (AR) is a program that encourages students to read independently and checks comprehension through short quizzes. It helps build reading fluency, comprehension skills, and a love of reading—while allowing teachers to track progress and celebrate milestones.
